Tie-Dye: What am I doing wrong?

I tried to Tye-die for the first time today. I bought a box of powder Laughing purple, and a bottle of Scarlet Rit liquid dye. I bought new white shirts, the twisted middle, tied with bands rubber, and soaked in baths of dye (pigment mixed with a cup of iodized salt) for about 90 minutes each. Although I did not wash shirt before dyeing. I rinsed and dried purple shirt later, and he came out well, but the color has disappeared. Not as deep as the dye bath or dark purple. I washed and dried red shirt immediately after removal of the tank. The design looks good, but again, the scarlet was vanished somewhere between peach and pink. No darkness. What am I doing wrong?

In the words of Adam Savage from Mythbusters … "So it not your problem .. "wash the shirts first. Always. New fresh from the factory shirt, finishes often have chemicals in look better in stores, clearer. whiter, more beautiful under the lights, etc., and many of these fibers avoid reacting with the dye. There were shirts with or without crew to enter the dye? many professionals (like me) pre-wet the fabric before dyeing. This "open" fiber and makes them absorb more dye. Finally, the local supply of chlorinated water at no smell of bleach and / or hard water? "Boiled and cooled water or distilled water or soft water or rain water. A few highly chlorinated water can react chemically with dyes. But I 'm almost 100% sure that the problem was not to wash the shirts first.
